Revamping our innovation strategy to support Indigenous innovation

Read on to learn about our suggestions on revamping Canada’s Innovation Strategy to support Indigenous innovation, published in the Hill Times.

“To build a truly inclusive national innovation strategy, we must tailor programs to Indigenous values, expand access to capital, prioritize Indigenous women innovators and Indigenous communities, and amplify success stories.” – Indigenous Innovation Council.

Indigenous innovation has shaped Canada’s history— from kayaks to polycropping, and even hypodermic needles. But challenges remain – Indigenous owned-businesses represent just 1.4% of Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises, with Indigenous women leading only 25% of them.

It’s time to improve that. In this opinion piece published by The Hill Times, members of the Indigenous Innovation Council call for bold action to:

  • Expand access to capital and mentorship

  • Embed Indigenous values in innovation strategies

  • Support Indigenous women entrepreneurs

  • And celebrate Indigenous success stories!
